UNEP says new tropical forest facility will curb methane emissions

By Abdullahi Lukman

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says the newly launched Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), now valued at $6.7 billion, will drive rapid, high-impact measures to cut methane emissions. UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen announced this in a statement on November 23, 2025, at the close of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

Andersen said the TFFF forms part of strengthened global momentum at COP30, which also saw unprecedented leadership from Indigenous Peoples across the Amazon and other regions under the Brazil Presidency’s Action Agenda. She noted that support for climate action is growing among businesses, local governments, communities, civil society, women, youth and people of African descent.

She added that the Belém negotiations demonstrated that the Paris Agreement is “working and delivering results,” including calls to triple global adaptation finance by 2035, establish a just-transition mechanism and explore how trade and mountain protection can be integrated into climate policy.

According to Andersen, UNEP research shows the scale of the climate challenge remains significant, but proven solutions still offer a path to achieving global commitments. She urged countries to treat their new national climate plans as baselines for greater ambition, not limits.

Maintaining a 1.5°C pathway, she said, will require an unprecedented acceleration of implementation to provide clean energy, jobs, clean air and climate resilience.

She also stressed the need for stronger financing and prioritisation of adaptation efforts as climate impacts intensify.

Andersen added that COP30 reaffirmed growing global determination—inside and outside negotiations—to transition away from fossil fuels and halt deforestation, in line with commitments made at COP28.
