UN Climate Chief visits Nigeria to Strengthen Climate Action

By Abbas Nazil

Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, for a four-day official visit aimed at fostering robust climate strategies and highlighting the economic and social benefits of ambitious climate action.

During his arrival in Abuja, Stiell emphasized the critical role of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in unlocking new economic opportunities and enhancing the nation’s resilience to climate change.

He underscored that bold climate initiatives are not merely environmental imperatives but also catalysts for economic growth, job creation, and poverty alleviation.

Stiell stated, “Implementing a strong climate plan can lift people out of poverty and secure energy access for all.”

The UN climate chief highlighted the urgency of transitioning to sustainable energy sources, noting that such a shift is “unstoppable” and aligns with global trends toward cleaner, more affordable energy.

He pointed out that embracing renewable energy not only addresses environmental concerns but also reduces pollution and health costs, leading to a more secure and prosperous society.

Stiell also addressed the significance of climate finance, urging developed nations and financial institutions to fulfill their commitments to support developing countries like Nigeria in their climate endeavors.

He remarked that adequate climate investments are essential to unlock new opportunities and drive progress, emphasizing that this financial support is “not charity” but a strategic move to curb inflation and stabilize economies affected by climate-induced disasters.

In his discussions with Nigerian officials, Stiell commended the country’s efforts in environmental conservation, particularly initiatives like preserving mangrove forests and contributing to the Great Green Wall in the Sahel region.

He noted that these projects not only protect biodiversity but also enhance Nigeria’s resilience to extreme weather events, thereby safeguarding lives and livelihoods.

Looking ahead, Stiell is scheduled to attend a symposium on March 6 in Lagos, titled “Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangrove, and Art,” organized by Nigeria’s National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS) at the Lekki Conservation Centre.

At this event, he will deliver a speech focusing on how Nigeria’s new climate plan can drive economic growth and why decisive climate action is vital for sustainable development.

He will also participate in a panel discussion with business leaders and engage with civil society representatives to further explore collaborative approaches to climate challenges.

Stiell’s visit underscores the UNFCCC’s commitment to supporting nations in implementing the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius.

His engagement with Nigerian stakeholders reflects a shared vision of integrating climate action with economic development, ensuring that environmental sustainability and prosperity go hand in hand.

As Nigeria continues to develop and implement its climate policies, Stiell’s visit serves as a reminder of the opportunities that lie in embracing a sustainable and resilient future.

The collaboration between the UNFCCC and Nigeria exemplifies the global effort required to tackle climate change effectively and equitably.
