UK targets vape sellers and online marketplaces in crackdown on e-waste

By Faridat Salifu

Vape retailers and global online platforms such as Amazon and eBay will, for the first time, be required to pay for the recycling of the electronic products they sell, under new rules designed to tackle Britain’s mounting e-waste problem.

The regulations, announced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, recently expand the country’s waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) system to include disposable vapes as a standalone category. Officials said the move reflects the surge in popularity of single-use devices and the environmental hazards posed by the lithium batteries and copper they contain.

Online marketplaces, long accused of sidestepping responsibility, must now register with the Environment Agency and report sales data to determine recycling fees. The shift places foreign sellers under the same obligations as UK-based retailers, closing a loophole that critics say has undermined the waste management system for years.

Environment Secretary Steve Barclay said the changes will “make sure those who profit from disposable goods contribute to their disposal, not taxpayers or the environment.”

Analysts note that millions of disposable vapes are discarded each week in the UK, with many ending up in landfills or as litter, creating fire risks and wasting valuable metals. Recycling advocates welcomed the reforms, saying they will help build new infrastructure, encourage greener product design, and send a clear message to industries profiting from the throwaway economy.

The government confirmed the stricter requirements will take full effect in early 2026, forming part of a wider push to recover critical materials and promote a circular electronics market.
