Uganda Ordered to Compensate Victims of Lord’s Resistance Army
The Ugandan government has been ordered to pay reparations to victims of war crimes committed by former Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) commander Thomas Kwoyelo.
Kwoyelo was sentenced to 40 years in prison in October following his conviction for murder, kidnapping, torture, and other crimes. The court ordered payments of $2,700 for families of deceased victims and $1,350 for survivors of gender-based violence. Kwoyelo was found to be incapable of compensating the victims due to his “indigent” status, resulting in the court ordering that the government bear the costs.
The LRA, founded in 1986 by Joseph Kony, led a more than 20-year insurgency against the Ugandan government and is accused of multiple massacres. Kony remains at large.
