Uganda Confirms Ebola Outbreak, One Death Reported

The Ugandan Ministry of Health has announced that it had confirmed an outbreak of the Ebola virus in Kampala, with one reported death. The victim was a 32-year-old male nurse from Mulago National Referral Hospital who had sought treatment at multiple facilities. The health ministry reported that it had identified 44 contacts of the late nurse, including 30 others in the health care field.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has allocated U.S.$1 million to support Uganda’s efforts in combating the Sudan Ebola Virus Disease (SUDV), a strain of the Ebola virus. SUDV is an extremely infectious hemorrhagic fever transmitted through bodily fluids and tissues. It is one of several strains of Ebola virus known to cause outbreaks.
The current outbreak marks Uganda’s eighth Ebola outbreak since 2000. The last outbreak in Uganda occurred at the end of 2022, and it was declared over on January 11, 2023. The Ministry of Health has urged the public to remain calm and take preventative measures, such as avoiding direct contact with suspected Ebola patients or their belongings.
