Trump’s policy shifts won’t affect Asia’s green energy goals – Gentari CEO

By Abdullahi Lukman

Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari, the renewable energy division of Malaysia’s Petronas, has stated that recent US political changes, including President Donald Trump’s new tariffs and promotion of fossil fuels, will not impact Gentari’s growth plans or the renewable energy sector.

According to Purohit, the commitment to transitioning to a net-zero future remains strong, especially in Asia, where enabling policies are robust.

“We must remain focused on the transition to net zero, regardless of global political shifts,” Purohit said, emphasizing that these changes do not alter Gentari’s strategy or operations.

He explained that while political dynamics in the US may be evolving, Gentari’s primary focus remains on the Asia Pacific region, where there is substantial support for renewable energy development.

Gentari’s renewable energy portfolio in India, currently around 6 GW, continues to expand, with 2.3 GW of assets already operational.

Purohit highlighted that financing is not a major concern, as the company has been able to secure funding for its projects.

He also confirmed that Gentari continues to receive full backing from Petronas, though he declined to comment on rumors regarding Petronas selling a stake in Gentari.

Looking ahead, Purohit reaffirmed that the company remains selective in its project choices, ensuring they are well-supported with necessary contracts such as power purchase agreements and green hydrogen off takers.

Despite rising interest rates in recent years, which have increased the cost of capital, Purohit expressed optimism as rates are starting to decrease.

“We only pursue projects we are confident in delivering,” he concluded.
