By Omotayo Edubi

A boat heading to Cotonou has capsized at the early hours of Friday morning 24th December (Christmas Eve) in the middle of the sea.

The number of demise is not yet confirmed but scores have been said to have died and others in process of recovery.

The capsize is allegedly as a result to the overloading of passengers and their luggage.

Several people on Social media have commented on what might be the cause of the accident.

A user @dapo05 said “if only Laos to Contonou road was good, many people would avoid death by trying to use the sea”

Another user @Stanley__u said “These guys always overload that banana boat, if you see the amount of load they carry couples with the persons inside you will just feel sorry for them”.

@the_azoru said” why would government to make sure passengers using this means of transport are obliged to wear a life jacket, I know if you board a plane you must use a seat belt or is travelling by sea be added to 1000 ways to die in Nigeria”

In additional a user who said she has boarded a boat cause she was scared to travel by road and did not even bother to check on flight ticket because she was not even sure there was and if there was, she didn’t think should afford it.

A lot of other comments have blamed the Lagos State Government of poor regulation in water transport and meager security for the underprivileged along with police harassment.
