Tinubu to pririotise gas development

The Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen, has declared that the President Bola Tinubu administration is committed to developing gas as a key source of energy for the country.

He made this statement on Wednesday at the inauguration of the “Decade of Gas” secretariat in Abuja. The “Decade of Gas” is a Federal Government initiative to promote the supply and distribution of gas for power generation and industrial use on commercial bases.

Verheijen said that Nigeria had a long history with gas, from being a major exporter of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), to looking into the future, when gas would play a vital role in the industrialisation of the country.

He said that the president valued gas highly and wanted to see the country maximise its potential.

The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, said that the country was transitioning to become more of a gas-based country for domestic consumption and export.

He said that the project was a collaborative effort among various stakeholders, who agreed that the secretariat should be hosted by a regulator.

He said that NMDPRA, as the Midstream regulator, was chosen as the host of the secretariat, which was formerly located at the Energy office in Jabi.

He also said that they were working on about 15 different projects from the industry in the short term.

The Coordinator of the project, Mr Ed Ebong, said that they were already working on some of them.
