President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for increased funding and legislative support for Nigeria’s space programme due to its critical role in national development.
Speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the president underscored the transformative impact of space technology on modern communication, navigation, and security systems.
Represented by the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, Tinubu highlighted the growing reliance on space capabilities in addressing global challenges and fostering innovation.
“Space technology provides critical insights into Earth’s surface, enabling better management of resources such as air, land, and water,” the president noted, adding, “These tools have revolutionised business communication and navigation systems, offering solutions to challenges in security and environmental management.”
President Tinubu urged members of the National Assembly to prioritise funding for NASRDA, citing the need for Nigeria to remain competitive in the global space race.
“I appeal to our lawmakers to increase allocations to the space programme and strengthen the legal framework establishing NASRDA,” he said, stating, “This will enhance the vibrancy of Nigeria’s space ecosystem and its international engagements.”
President Tinubu described space exploration as an area of limitless opportunities, noting that advanced nations are leveraging space technology for economic and strategic advantages.
Speaking earlier, the Director-General of NASRDA, Dr. Mathew Adepoju, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to fostering innovation and professional growth among its workforce.
“We are dedicated to creating an environment that allows our staff to realise their full potential while promoting collaboration and cutting-edge research,” Adepoju said.
The event marked NASRDA’s achievements over the past 25 years, with stakeholders calling for sustained investment to bolster Nigeria’s position in the global space industry. END
