President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a significant step towards advancing healthcare in Nigeria by directing an increase in the health sector budget to 10%.
The momentous announcement was made during the Gatefield Health Summit in Abuja, as revealed by Dr. Salma Ibrahim-Anas, the Special Adviser on Health to the President.
In partnership with the National Action on Sugar Reduction Coalition and the World Bank, the Gatefield Health Summit focused on exploring avenues to bolster healthcare financing through pro-health taxes.
Dr. Ibrahim-Anas conveyed President Tinubu’s firm commitment to boosting the budgetary allocation for the health sector, with the proviso that the resources are utilized effectively.
“In his own words, President Tinubu is determined to increase the allocation for the health sector, starting from 10% of the total budgetary allocation. This is just the initial step,” stated Dr. Ibrahim-Anas.
She further elucidated that any future increments in the health budget would hinge on demonstrated efficiency in fund
utilization and ensuring transparency and accountability.
Emphasizing the significance of generating funds from taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages, the Special Adviser proposed that these proceeds be funneled into the health sector. This strategic move is
expected to bolster financial resources available for health initiatives and fortify the country’s healthcare system.
President Tinubu’s directive to augment the health budget marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to uplift healthcare services in Nigeria.
By prioritizing increased budget allocation and efficient resource utilization, the government aims to tackle pressing health
challenges and elevate the overall well-being of its citizens.
