The urgent need for Eco-Agro in Nigeria (1)

By George George Idowu

In recent years, the concept of eco-agro has emerged as a promising solution in addressing most agriculture issues in Nigeria and the world at large.

Eco-agro, which integrates principles of ecological conservation and sustainable farming practices, offers Nigeria a pathway towards resilient and prosperous agricultural development.

It is evident that Nigeria’s agricultural sector is vulnerable to environmental degradation, including soil erosion, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity.

Conventional farming methods often exacerbate these problems through heavy pesticide use, monocropping, and inefficient water management.

Hence, Eco-agro emphasizes practices that promote soil health, conserve water, and protect biodiversity.

Techniques such as agroforestry, crop rotation, and organic farming can help restore degraded lands and reduce environmental impact. Meaning with use of eco-agro most of these agricultural problems will be curbed.

Similarly, with climate change intensifying, Nigeria is experiencing more frequent and severe floods and heatwaves. Eco-agro emphasizes climate-smart practices that build resilience in farming systems.

Diversifying crops, adopting effecting irrigation farming and implementing rainwater harvesting techniques can help farmers adapt to changing climate conditions.

By mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing carbon sequestration, eco-agro also contributes to climate change mitigation efforts.

Presently, Nigeria’s growing population which is estimated to be over 200 million people and urbanization pose challenges to food production and distribution.

However, eco-agro will help promotes diverse and nutritious crops, thereby reducing reliance on a few staple foods.

Also, by enhancing soil fertility and reducing chemical inputs, eco-agro can improve crop yields sustainably. This approach also supports local food systems thus ensuring communities have access to fresh, healthy produce.

Water scarcity is a pressing issue in many parts of Nigeria, exacerbated by inefficient irrigation practices and pollution.

Eco-agro promotes water-efficient techniques such as drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and integrated water management systems.

By conserving water resources and minimizing pollution, eco-agro helps safeguard water quality and availability for agriculture and communities.

It is crystal clear that the adoption of eco-agro in Nigeria is not just an option but a necessity for sustainable development.

By prioritizing environmental conservation, climate resilience, amongst others eco-agro can transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector into a resilient and prosperous engine of growth.

Through concerted efforts and partnerships, Nigeria can harness the potential of eco-agro to build a more sustainable and equitable future for its people and the planet.
