Tackling Flooding: Lagos Govt Initiates System 44 Drainage Channel Construction
The Lagos State government has taken a significant step in addressing flooding challenges by launching the construction of the nearly 5-kilometer System 44 drainage channel. This critical project spans along Mobil Road, Ogombo, and Ikota in the Lekki axis, with the aim of controlling flooding as the rainy season approaches.
Key Points:
Government Commitment: The announcement was made by Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, who emphasized that the construction of the drainage channel demonstrates the state government’s readiness and commitment to solving flooding issues across communities in Lagos.
Free Flow of Rainwater: The System 44 drainage channel is designed to ensure a free flow of rainwater, preventing inundation during heavy rains. It runs from Lekki II to Ikota and plays a crucial role in managing excess water in the Lekki area.
Clearing Encroaching Structures: In late 2023, the Lagos State government took action by clearing encroaching structures along the System 44 drainage channel. Areas affected included Lekki Scheme II, Gedegede Community, and Ikota GRA.
Contract for Concrete Lining: Following the clearance of encroaching structures, the state awarded a contract for the concrete lining of the System 44 drainage channel. This lining will enhance its efficiency in channeling rainwater and preventing flooding.
Holistic Approach: The Lagos State Government’s preparations for the rainy season involved identifying various drainage channels and canals across the state. These channels, including System 44, System 156, and System 157, were targeted for realignment and reclaiming six-meter setbacks on both sides.
Balancing Property Rights: While removing structures encroaching upon the setbacks, the government also explored workable solutions to restore these setbacks without resorting to demolitions. This approach considered the rights of affected property owners.
Mitigating Flooding: In March 2024, the government further strengthened its flood mitigation efforts by awarding the contract for the concrete lining of the System 44 drainage channel from Lekki II to Ikota.
This proactive step aims to minimize flooding in the Lekki area during the upcoming rainy season.
The construction of the System 44 drainage channel underscores the Lagos State government’s commitment to creating a resilient and flood-free environment for its residents.
As the project progresses, it will play a crucial role in safeguarding communities against the adverse effects of heavy rainfall and ensuring sustainable urban development.
