Swedish Ecopreneur Declare Microplastics Planetary Emergency

By Abdullahi Lukman

Microplastics pose a planetary emergency, not just an environmental concern, according to Bengt Rittri, Swedish ecopreneur and founder of clean water solutions company Bluewater.

His urgent call to action follows a landmark study published in *Nature*, which reveals the pervasive and deep-rooted presence of microplastics throughout the world’s oceans.

The international study, conducted across 1,885 ocean stations between 2014 and 2024, used advanced sampling techniques to detect microplastic particles—from 1 to 100 micrometers—throughout the entire water column, including depths over 6,800 meters.

The highest concentrations were found in the Mariana Trench, exceeding 13,500 particles per cubic meter, with the Atlantic Ocean averaging 2,200 particles per cubic meter in its upper layers.

Researchers discovered that plastic pollution is now contributing foreign, or “allochthonous,” carbon to marine ecosystems.

This form of synthetic carbon disrupts natural biogeochemical cycles, distorts radiocarbon dating by as much as 420 years, and interferes with vital oceanic processes like nitrification and denitrification, which are essential for marine biodiversity and climate regulation.

“It is painfully clear that we’ve allowed plastic pollution to compromise the planet’s life-support systems,” Rittri said.

“This is not just about litter or aesthetics, but about safeguarding the integrity of Earth’s oceans and atmosphere.”

Rittri called on world leaders, businesses, and individuals to take immediate action by eliminating single-use plastic bottles and embracing sustainable water solutions.

He emphasized that every avoided plastic item is a step toward restoring planetary health.

The findings mark a significant turning point in how microplastic pollution is understood, suggesting it now functions as a disruptive agent in Earth’s natural systems—one that demands urgent global response to prevent irreversible ecological harm.
