By Our Correspondent

The Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako has declared that the responsibility of evacuation of refuse that littered around the country is not that of the central but state governments noting that it’s a challenge the government is confronted with.

The minister made the statement last weekend at the joint press conference in celebration of the 2024 World Press Freedom Day, held at the National Press Centre, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

He said the federal government on the issue of waste mangement is to create a national network, a platform that states can plug in for the circular management of their waste.

Addressing the audience during the conference themed: A Press For The Planet: Journalism In
The Face of Environmental Crisis’’, the minister disclosed the federal government’s plan to establish a comprehensive National Waste Management Network, which will serve as a platform for states to collaborate, enhance their
participation in the circular management of waste.

He said the initiative was in response to mounting concerns over environmental
degradation, indiscriminate lining up of refuse by roadsides and the pressing need to transition towards a more sustainable future.

This, he said, led to the launch of a national circular roadmap which will engage states to domesticate and serve as a framwork for
recycling some previously considered waste, promoting state engagement in recycling
initiatives.

In addition to the environmental benefits of the initiative, establishment of the network is poised to generate significant economic
advantages for the participating states.

He said by streamlining waste management process and promoting resource efficiency, states stand to reduce operational costs
associated with waste dsiposal and landfill management.

According to him, the network will facilitate sharing of resources, expertise, and best practices among states, and local governments and foster cohesive approach to waste management across the country.

The minister recalled the federal government, two weeks ago, launched the National Circular roadmap which will now engage the states to domesticte and serve as framework for recycling of some of the country’s previously considered waste
