Southwest Governors move to tackle food challenges

• Elect Sanwo-Olu Forum Chairman

The governors of the Southwest geo- political zone have jointly launched a collaborative initiative to boost food production in the region in a bid to address persistent food insecurity and inflation.

The forum has also elected Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as its chairman.

The governors aim to reduce the soaring prices of food items across the nation. Despite ongoing efforts by governments at the federal, states, local government areas and individual activities to curb inflation, food prices have remained stubbornly high, prompting this united response.

The six governor, Dapo Abiodun ( Ogun), Seyi Makinde ( Oyo), Ademola Adeleke ( Osun), Oyebamji (Ekiti), Lucky Ayedatiwa (Ondo) and their host, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, on Monday, directed their commissioners of agriculture to commence immediate actions toward achieving food security within the geopolitical zone.

In their statement made available to press men, the governors praised the Federal Government for initiating key infrastructure projects, such as the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway and the Badagry to Sokoto Highway, which will traverse several states in the region.

However, they also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expedite the rehabilitation of other critical Federal roads, including the Lagos-Sango-Ota to Abeokuta, Ibadan to Ilesa expressway, Akure to Ado-Ekiti Highway, and Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomoso to Ilorin Highway.

In addition to their focus on agriculture, the governors reiterated their support for the Southwest Regional Security Network, known as Amotekun, and condemned the Yoruba Nation agitation.

They also advocated for the establishment of state police, expressing satisfaction that the Southwest remains the most peaceful region in the country.

The governors called on the Senate to approve the Southwest Development Commission Bill, following its passage in the House of Representatives, to further drive development in the region.
