The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) had upscaled collaboration with the Maritime Police and Nigerian Navy to enhance security and operational efficiency in the nation’s maritime sector.
The Council’s Executive Secretary/CEO, Dr. Pius Akutah, made this known during high-level meetings with key security agencies in Lagos.
Akutah emphasized the urgent need for joint efforts to address maritime security challenges, particularly attacks on ships, criminal activities on port access roads, and illegal container interceptions along port corridors.
He urged the police to work closely with the NSC’s enforcement unit to curb irregularities and improve safety in the sector.
The NSC boss stressed that stronger collaboration among maritime security agencies is crucial to safeguarding shipping operations.
He pointed out that criminal activities disrupt efficiency and pose significant risks to trade and commerce.
“We must work together to eliminate these illegal activities that undermine the efficiency and security of our maritime sector,” Akutah stated.
Responding to the concerns raised, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Maritime, Garba Yusuf, reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to supporting the council in its efforts to combat illegal activities.
Yusuf assured that the police would take decisive action against officers found engaging in unlawful practices and encouraged the NSC to report such incidents.
He highlighted the importance of a robust partnership between law enforcement agencies and maritime stakeholders, stressing that effective policing in the sector requires collective efforts.
