In a groundbreaking revelation, Vice President Kashim Shettima unveiled the Federal Government’s commitment to extending health insurance coverage to a staggering 50 million Nigerians in the next four years.

The momentous announcement was made during the commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) in Borno State.

Under the visionary “Renewed Hope Agenda” championed by President Bola Tinubu, the primary objective is to achieve universal health coverage, ensuring that every Nigerian can access healthcare services in a fair and equitable manner.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice President at the event, Dr. Salma Anas Kolo, the Special Adviser to the President on Health, assured the nation of top-quality healthcare services through the reinforcement of primary and secondary health facilities.

“We will proactively expand insurance coverage,” proclaimed Shettima. “The government is resolute in reaching a minimum of 50 million Nigerians by 2027.”

Highlighting the core priorities of President Tinubu’s health agenda, Shettima underscored the focus on health governance, leadership, and institutional reforms, as well as health financing to reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

The comprehensive plan also entails integrated healthcare delivery, promoting local manufacturing of health products, increased investment in medical education, and tackling brain drain and medical tourism.

Furthermore, the Vice President announced the Federal Government’s approval of allowances for resident doctors, addressing a critical concern in the healthcare sector.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, lauded the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for its remarkable accomplishments in the health sector.

He encouraged the institution to embrace cutting-edge approaches such as smart medicine, integrating artificial intelligence, technology, and data science to elevate healthcare services to new heights.

Over the past four decades, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital has touched the lives of over 33 million individuals, experiencing an astounding 150 per cent surge in patronage, according to Chief Medical Director, Professor Ahmed Ahidjo.

Additionally, Professor Isaac Adewole, former Minister of Health, urged the hospital’s management to focus on specialized training for medical professionals in areas like cancer, kidney, and heart care, catering to the unique healthcare needs of the region and beyond.
