Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp. has bolstered its fleet with the acquisition of two Japanese-built vessels, marking a strategic move to expand its capacity and competitiveness in the global shipping market.
The Greek shipowner has entered into two agreements worth approximately $69 million for a Newcastlemax purchase and a bareboat charter with a purchase obligation for a Capesize vessel.
The Newcastlemax, a 2013-built ship from Imabari Shipbuilding, boasts a capacity of 207,851 deadweight tons (dwt) and will be rebranded as Meiship.
Scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2025, the vessel is poised to enhance Seanergy’s existing fleet, which focuses on large-capacity bulk carriers.
The second acquisition involves a 2011-built Capesize vessel from Mitsui Shipbuilding, with a capacity of 178,459 dwt, which will be renamed Blueship.
Seanergy has committed to a six-month bareboat charter agreement, including a $4 million upfront payment and a daily rate of $9,750. Following this period, Seanergy will exercise its option to purchase the vessel for $22.5 million.
To fund these acquisitions, Seanergy plans to use a mix of cash reserves and credit facilities.
Stamatis Tsantanis, Chairman & CEO of Seanergy, expressed confidence in the strategic value of these acquisitions, noting that both vessels align with the company’s goal of strengthening its fleet and positioning itself for future growth.
“This expansion is a significant step forward in our fleet enhancement strategy, ensuring we remain competitive in a dynamic market,” Tsantanis said.
Following the delivery of these vessels, Seanergy’s fleet will total 21 vessels, amounting to 3.8 million dwt, further solidifying its place within the global shipping industry.
