SDG 2: Nutritionist urges governments to prioritise food security
A nutritionist, Mrs Felicia Ojo, on Thursday called on governments to prioritise food security for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2.
Ojo made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.
NAN reports that SDG 2 aims to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030.
“Sustainable Development Goal 2 aims to achieve zero hunger. This goal is important for all people but crucial for children.
“This goal can be achieved by ensuring food security and nutrition in the country.
“Meeting this need presents an important opportunity for tackling malnutrition,” Ojo said.
According to her, malnutrition is a leading cause of severe health problems among children under five years.
“Rising inflation has increased food costs, which has heightened the crisis in children’s food security and malnutrition.
“Many Nigerian children currently experience vitamins and mineral deficiencies which result in stunt growth and weakening of immune system.
“Stunting has long-term effects on individuals and societies, including poor cognition and educational performance,” she said.
