School Children Encouraged to Participate in Agriculture for Food Security

To tackle the pressing issues of food scarcity and production in Nigeria, efforts have been made to motivate school children across the country to actively participate in agriculture.

The School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG), an affiliate program of the FixPolitics initiative, has introduced the ‘Operation Feed My Family’ capstone project, aiming to foster agricultural engagement among students.

Mrs. Olaoluwa Makinde, the Team Lead of the ‘Operation Feed My Family’ project, emphasized the group’s dedication to combating food insecurity through urban and community-based farming initiatives.

The objective is to raise awareness, generate interest, and inspire actions that contribute to improving food and nutrition security at the individual and household levels.

The SPPG’s press statement released recently, highlighted that the capstone project is an integral part of the school program curriculum, enabling students to undertake community-focused initiatives aligned with specific Sustainable Development Goals.

‘Operation Feed My Family’ aligns with the vision of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to build Green Cities and address food insecurity, which became more evident during the global pandemic, particularly in urban areas.

The program aims to encourage school children to cultivate commonly consumed fruits and vegetables within their educational institutions.

By motivating students to replicate these agricultural practices in their homes and communities, the project seeks to promote nutrition, increase agricultural awareness, and provide learning opportunities for participating schools, families, and communities.

Through the implementation of ‘Operation Feed My Family,’ the SPPG envisions a future where school children actively contribute to agricultural production, fostering self-sufficiency and resilience in
the face of food scarcity.

The project not only addresses immediate food security challenges but also equips the younger generation with valuable skills and knowledge, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous agricultural sector in Nigeria.

Initiatives like ‘Operation Feed My Family’ demonstrate the commitment of various stakeholders in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. They aim to engage the youth and cultivate a culture of agricultural participation.

With proper encouragement and support, school children have the potential to become the driving force behind Nigeria’s agricultural revolution, securing a brighter future for all as the country continues to make significant strides in bolstering its agricultural sector.
