Salmon are amazing food fish which are greatly farmed in many parts of the world. It is a general name for several commercially important species of euryhaline ray-finned fish which are from the family Salmonidae. Other species that are closely related to Salmon in the same family include trout, char, grayling, whitefish, lenok and taimen.
Salmon is known as one of the most nutritious and healthy foods on the planet. It is a popular fatty fish with nutrients that may decrease certain risks factors for several diseases. It’s nutritional value may vary from specie to specie. Some species like farmed Salmon contains more healthy fats and calories while the Wild caught Salmon is richer in proteins.
Salmon contains selenium, an essential nutrient that promotes the synthesis of DNA, enhances reproductive health and thyroid metabolism. It contains a heart healthy fat known as Omega 3 fatty acids which promotes healthy brains and reduces inflammation. It promotes the proper function of the central nervous system due to its Vitamin B12 contents.
Salmon are rich in B Vitamins such as vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, thiamin, riboflavin, folic acid and the mineral, potassium. The vitamins are essential for energy production, wound healing, heart and brain health. Potassium helps to regulate the blood pressure and prevents the risk of getting stroke.
Astaxanthin is a powerful compound that is found in Salmon that are associated with numerous health benefits such as: promotes the synthesis of High level lipoprotein which is known as good cholesterol while eliminating the bad one. It may also fight oxidative stress, improve the elasticity of the skin, prevents wrinkles and promotes longevity.
Salmon is a great food and frequent consumption may help during pregnancy. It gives protection to the fetal brain, prevents cognitive decline and dementia.
