Sachet Water Manufacturers Seek Govt Intervention Funds
By Egbodo Queen
The Association of Drinking Water Producers is urging the federal government to establish a dedicated intervention fund aimed at bolstering production and distribution within the water sector.
This call comes amidst concerns over the adverse effects of fuel subsidy removal on clean water companies, with the association advocating for access to the fund at single-digit interest rates.
Mrs. Clementine Ativi, Chairperson of the Association of Drinking Water Producers, emphasized the necessity of such funding to alleviate the burdensome costs of production, thereby ensuring the affordability and accessibility of clean water to Nigerians.
“We recognize the imperative of maintaining consistent and affordable prices for our products,” stated Mrs. Ativi.
“However, escalating expenses related to packaging materials and frequent interactions with nylon manufacturers have placed significant financial strain on our operations.”
Highlighting the critical role of the water sector in sustaining livelihoods and addressing unemployment, Mrs. Ativi underscored the need for governmental support to prevent its collapse.
“The economic challenges we face are unprecedented, and it is imperative that the government intervenes to safeguard the viability of our industry,” she asserted.
“We cannot overemphasize the importance of ensuring uninterrupted access to potable water for all Nigerians.”
Expressing concerns over the lack of recognition and support from government entities, Mrs. Ativi lamented the burden of excessive taxation and regulatory constraints faced by water producers.
“We find ourselves burdened with onerous taxes and regulatory hurdles, which hinder our ability to thrive,” she remarked.
“It is imperative that the government creates a conducive environment for the water production sector by instituting targeted intervention funds at favorable interest rates.”
In light of the prevailing economic challenges, the Association of Drinking Water Producers appeals for immediate action to stabilize the industry and alleviate the existing hardships.
“We implore the government to prioritize the creation of specialized funds to support water production and distribution,” urged Mrs. Ativi.
“By offering financial relief and fostering an enabling regulatory environment, we can ensure the sustainability of clean water provision and contribute to the socio-economic development of our nation.”
