Rivers Community Set To Commence Commercial Coconut Farming

By Grace Samuel

Asarama-Ija community in Andoni local government area of Rivers state, has revealed plans to engage in commercial coconut farming so as to promote economic growth and create employment opportunities for people in the area.

Paramount Ruler of the Asarama-ija community, Mr. Inwon Urang, made this known during the annual Coconut Festival held in Andoni recently.

He emphasized the potential of coconut farming.

He described cocoanut farming as a profitable investment and stated that the community is actively working towards making it a significant economic activity by commercializing its production.

“We have obtained a large plot of land specifically for cultivating higher-quality coconut species, as we are thinking long-term rather than just focusing on the festival.

Coconut trees are well-suited to our geographical conditions and have economic value, so we aim to promote their growth. In the initial stage of the project, we plan to establish around 2,000 coconut plantations.

At present, the community already has approximately 3,000 coconut trees, yielding over 10,000 coconuts annually. This is why we are developing an investment plan that encompasses the entire coconut value chain,” he said.

The traditional ruler expressed readiness to partner with government and private investors towards achieving the aim of the people.

He added: “Coconut and its by-products have significant economic value, so we are eager to collaborate with both the government and private entrepreneurs in this area.”
