Rite foods removes 40 tonnes of plastic waste in Lagos during plastic free July

By Abdullahi Lukman

Rite Foods Limited has successfully removed 40 tonnes of plastic waste from Lagos as part of the global Plastic Free July campaign, reinforcing its commitment to a cleaner and healthier environment.

The effort was led through its Riteonthebeach project in partnership with Pop Beach Club, an eco-resort in Lagos, and supported by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The campaign included community activations at Ikeja City Mall, where over 30,000 recovery bags were distributed to residents to encourage plastic collection and recycling.

This initiative builds on Rite Foods’ ongoing beach clean-up efforts aimed at reducing plastic pollution and promoting a circular economy.

Seleem Adegunwa, Managing Director of Rite Foods, highlighted the active role of company employees in sorting and returning plastics, recovering 288 kg of post-consumer PET bottles in July alone, which prevented 293.76 kg of CO₂ emissions.

Mr. Ekuma Eze, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, stressed the importance of shared responsibility among communities, companies, and government to properly manage plastic waste.

He emphasized that the campaign demonstrates how sustainable solutions can reduce hazards to waterways and biodiversity.

The partnership with Pop Beach Club has also generated thousands of tons of plastic collected from Lagos shorelines, created jobs, and provided educational opportunities. Proceeds from recycled plastics support a back-to-school program for children in underserved communities, highlighting the social impact of the collaboration.
