Reps urges govt action, disaster preparedness in flood-prone areas

By Abdullahi Lukman
The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently improve flood control infrastructure and disaster preparedness in flood-prone regions to prevent future tragedies.
This appeal follows devastating floods in Mokwa, Niger State, and Edu Local Government Area in Kwara State, which resulted in over 500 confirmed deaths, hundreds missing, and thousands displaced.
The House also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials, including water purification equipment, to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases in affected communities.
The resolutions came after the adoption of a motion sponsored by Mr. Joshua Gana, highlighting the severe impact of torrential rains in late May 2025, which led to flooding exacerbated by the collapse of an old railway embankment.
The disaster destroyed more than 4,000 houses, injured at least 200 people, and devastated farmlands, causing food insecurity among vulnerable groups.
The House commended President Ahmed Tinubu, Niger State Governor, NGOs, and citizens for their financial support totaling over three billion naira to assist victims.
Concerns were raised about the risk of disease outbreaks such as cholera, typhoid, and respiratory infections due to contaminated floodwaters and overcrowded displacement camps.
The Committees on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness and Legislative Compliance were tasked with ensuring the government’s adherence to these resolutions.
A minute of silence was observed in memory of the flood victims.
