The House of Representatives Committee on Environment recently summoned the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Olajide Idris, over reported release of hazardous gaseous substances in Abuja.
The committee issued the invitation following a petition concerning alleged emissions in the Gaduwa area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Residents and stakeholders have raised concerns about the possible health and environmental risks linked to the incident.
The committee’s letter, signed by its chairman, Hon. Michael Irom Etaba, directs Dr. Idris to appear and explain the nature, source, and public health implications of the reported emissions.
He is also expected to provide information on NCDC’s immediate response to the situation and measures taken to prevent recurrence.
According to the invitation, Dr. Idris is scheduled to appear before the committee on 24 June 2025, accompanied by relevant staff and technical documentation.
The committee aims to assess the NCDC’s role in addressing the incident and ensure that appropriate actions were taken to protect public health.
Lawmakers say the inquiry is part of their oversight function to guarantee that federal agencies respond effectively to public health threats.
They also stressed that transparency and accountability are essential in managing environmental hazards in the capital.
The committee expects the NCDC to submit preliminary findings, including any risk assessments or medical reports, to support its deliberations.
The outcome of the hearing may inform future recommendations on environmental safety and public health protection strategies in the FCT.
