Renewable energy: Nigeria launches training programme for young talents

By Faridat Salifu

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the NEXTGEN RESCO Programme to empower 60 young Nigerians with skills to drive the country’s renewable energy sector.

The initiative, which is a collaborative effort between the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), and the Ecological Innovation Empowerment Initiative (EIEI), aims to equip a new generation of professionals for Nigeria’s clean energy future.

The 12-month programme, which is now open for applications, offers young graduates the opportunity to gain industry-relevant knowledge, engage with sector experts, and gain practical exposure to real-world challenges in renewable energy.

According to the REA, the programme will help nurture skilled professionals who will play a pivotal role in expanding Nigeria’s renewable energy capacity and ensuring the sustainability of its energy transition.

Successful participants will undergo intensive training in renewable energy systems, leadership, and industry practices, with a focus on preparing them for roles in the private sector.

Upon completion of the programme, graduates will be equipped to apply their newly acquired expertise in private companies across Nigeria, contributing directly to the country’s energy goals.

“The NEXTGEN RESCO Programme is a critical initiative in ensuring that Nigeria’s renewable energy sector has the skilled workforce it needs to thrive,” said an anonymous REA spokesperson, adding, “We are committed to developing young professionals who can bring innovation and leadership to the industry.”

The programme is open to graduates with a minimum CGPA of 3.5, no more than two years of post-graduate experience, and strong leadership qualities. Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply, and candidates who are currently serving in Abuja are also eligible for the programme.

The initiative is expected to play a key role in advancing Nigeria’s clean energy ambitions and creating a pipeline of local talent capable of supporting the nation’s transition to renewable energy sources.
