REI Co-op expands support for renewable energy projects across U.S.
By Abbas Nazil
Outdoor retailer, REI Co-op, has announced significant steps to support renewable energy development across the United States as part of its broader sustainability initiatives.
In 2025, REI partnered with multiple organizations to accelerate the deployment of clean energy and reduce its environmental footprint.
The company is backing a 2.5-megawatt community solar project in Woodbury, Minnesota, developed by US Solar.
The project will allocate 500 subscription spots for low- to moderate-income households, allowing them to access affordable renewable energy while contributing clean power to the local grid near REI’s Bloomington store.
REI joined a virtual power purchase agreement with Carhartt and other outdoor partners to develop an 18.5-megawatt solar portfolio in Texas.
This partnership aims to increase solar energy generation capacity and support corporate sustainability commitments by sourcing renewable electricity for operational needs.
REI also initiated a renewable energy project with Ever.green in South Carolina, further demonstrating the company’s dedication to expanding clean energy infrastructure.
The retailer strengthened its collaboration with Sol Systems and Nester Hosiery, one of its largest U.S. manufacturing partners, through a new three-year renewable energy certificate purchase agreement.
These initiatives are designed to reduce the company’s carbon footprint while encouraging renewable energy adoption across its supply chain.
By investing in community solar, virtual power purchase agreements, and renewable energy certificates, REI is fostering both environmental responsibility and energy accessibility for underserved populations.
The Woodbury project, in particular, highlights the co-op’s focus on equitable energy solutions, ensuring that low- and moderate-income households benefit from sustainable energy programs.
Through its partnerships with solar developers, REI is contributing to grid resilience and local clean energy production while promoting corporate and community sustainability.
Kelly Pickerel, editor-in-chief of Solar Power World, noted that REI’s 2025 projects exemplify a growing trend among U.S. companies to actively engage in renewable energy initiatives beyond direct operations.
By expanding solar projects, REI is supporting long-term environmental goals, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthening the renewable energy market in multiple states.
The co-op’s renewable energy strategy also includes educational and workforce components, encouraging stakeholders to participate in clean energy adoption and sustainable practices.
Overall efforts of REI’s 2025, demonstrate a comprehensive approach to sustainability, integrating corporate responsibility with community impact and clean energy expansion.
These projects are expected to serve as models for other retailers seeking to advance renewable energy deployment and reduce environmental impacts nationwide.
REI’s investment in solar energy infrastructure reflects a commitment to achieving measurable reductions in carbon emissions while supporting equitable access to renewable resources.
The company’s nationwide renewable energy portfolio illustrates the growing role of corporate leadership in addressing climate change through practical and scalable solutions.
