In his response to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) debate, President Cyril Ramaphosa called for the importance of unity, nation-building, and addressing South Africa’s pressing challenges. He called for unity against a “harsh global wind.”
He said that the significance of the forthcoming National Dialogue as a platform for diverse South Africans to develop common solutions to issues like poverty, unemployment, and inequality. He acknowledged the progress made over 30 years of democracy but stressed the need for accelerated growth, transformation, and inclusive economic development.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to land reform, social justice, and non-racialism while addressing the legacy of apartheid and forced removals. He also outlined efforts to improve infrastructure, boost local economies, and create jobs through public-private partnerships.
Ramaphosa cited the Government of National Unity (GNU) as an example of how South Africans can come together “to build a nation working alongside each other”. He expressed confidence in the GNU’s ability to deliver stability and progress, guided by the Constitution and the rule of law.
