Residents of Otukpo are counting their losses after a heavy rainstorm swept through the town, destroying homes and disrupting business activities.
The storm reportedly damaged several buildings and caused flooding in parts of the historic community, leaving many residents distressed.
In response, the paramount ruler of Idoma land, Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, appealed for calm and called on the Federal and Benue State governments to provide urgent assistance.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Mayor of Otukpo, Chief Ignatius Ogbogo, on behalf of the traditional ruler and the Idoma Area Traditional Council, the monarch urged authorities, through the National Emergency Management Agency, to provide emergency relief materials such as food, blankets and temporary shelter for displaced families.
He also called for the rehabilitation and expansion of drainage systems in the town to prevent future flooding and urged the creation of a special intervention fund to support affected traders and homeowners.
“What we welcomed as the first rain of the year and relief from the intense heat has unfortunately brought hardship to many households,” the statement said.
The monarch advised residents to clear drainage channels around their homes and avoid sheltering under weak structures or large trees during storms.
He urged those severely affected to report cases of damage or displacement to the local government secretariat for proper coordination of assistance.
“Otukpo has always been known for its resilience and unity. By standing together, we will rebuild our community stronger,” the statement added.
