Cross River state is experiencing a total blackout after a heavy rainstorm destroyed electricity installations in the State capital, Calabar.
The blackout has extended to the fifth day, NatureNews gathered.
The blackout started after last Thursday’s heavy rain and thunderstorm which ravaged the metropolis, destroying properties worth billions of Naira, including electrical installations in the city.
Besides the damaged electrical installations, big trees uprooted by the storm also fell on electric installations increasing the blackout which has affected many businesses in the metropolis.
A tour around the city by Daily Post revealed that technicians who make use of electricity for their work have suffered the most, especially those who do not own generators.
Mr Effiong Bassey, a welder who recounted his predicament to our reporter said it was becoming too difficult to feed his family.
“Since last week when the rain fell, I have not generated any income, my children and family are suffering,” he said.
Another technician who gave his name as Aniekan said he works on phones and phone installations, electricity is an important tool in our work
“Without electricity, we cannot work, I beg the power company to facilitate the installation of power as well as replacement of fallen poles in the affected areas.
“I have no alternative than to make available N50, 000 for additional power, if not my guests will not see cold drinks and the venue will be hot and unconducive,” he added.
At the time of filing this report, officials of the power distribution company and Calabar Urban Development Authority as well as the Ministry of Environment were seen clearing the streets of debris.
