Popular Lagos market faces closure over environmental infractions

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Lagos State Government has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to traders at Alabarago Market to comply with state environmental regulations or face possible closure.

This warning came after an inspection by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who assessed the market and other locations including Idi-Araba and Orile-Iganmu.

Wahab revealed that Alabarago Market was previously sealed last year due to environmental violations but has since become a dumping ground for waste, with traders blocking drainage systems by pushing market refuse onto the roads.

“They have agreed to clear everything, but if the cleanup is not done by tomorrow evening, we will consider sanctions, including closure,” he said.

The commissioner also urged Lagos residents to maintain cleanliness during the upcoming Sallah celebrations, stressing the importance of responsible waste management and encouraging the use of registered waste operators.

“Let us celebrate responsibly by taking ownership of our environment,” Wahab added.
