By Faridat Salifu

The Nigeria Police Force has once again demonstrated its dedication to upholding the law and implementing anti-crime measures to combat illegal activities at ports and economic centers in Nigeria.

This commitment aims to support the government’s efforts towards economic recovery and development in the country.

The Eastern Port Police Command recently announced the arrest of five suspects involved in diverting bags of wheat intended for the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) in Port-Harcourt on February 6th, 2024.

The diverted 1,238 bags of wheat, originally designated for transport from Ibeto Port Terminal, Port-Harcourt to an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Kano State, were intercepted by the operatives of the Nigeria Police.

The arrested suspects, Umar Hashim, Edidiong Umoh, Udah Stanley, Abubakar Jariri, and Yunusa Babangida, along with their accomplices, were apprehended for their involvement in the fraudulent diversion.

The police also recovered 1,238 stolen bags of wheat, as well as the truck and bus used in the act.

The recovered bags of wheat have been returned to the World Food Programme, and efforts are underway to locate the missing 602 bags of wheat and apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the crime.

Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated the Nigeria Police’s commitment to taking firm action against individuals engaging in activities that undermine the country’s economy and cause hardships for vulnerable members of the public.

He has instructed that the suspects be charged in court once investigations are concluded and all loose ends are tied up.
