Communities in Lagos, Ogun, and Kaduna states are starting the week on a greener note following a recent tree planting exercise by Polaris Bank in partnership with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF).
The initiative, part of the Bank’s environmental sustainability program launched in 2024, aims to restore degraded land, reduce carbon emissions, and promote climate-conscious practices nationwide.
Participants planted fruit-bearing and shade-providing trees at Lekki Conservation Centre in Lagos, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in Ogun, and Sardauna College in Kaduna.
Polaris Bank Executive Director Chris Ofikulu said the exercise highlights the Bank’s commitment to environmental sustainability and recalled leading the first tree planting at TASUED, Ogun, in 2024.
He added that the initiative supports the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration and fosters a greener future for communities.
Sharafadeen Muhammad, Executive Director, Operations, said protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and emphasized the ecological and economic value of the initiative.
In Ogun State, Divisional Head Yetunde Okeleye noted that planting economic trees helps restore degraded land, prevent soil erosion, and strengthen community livelihoods.
In Kaduna, Acting Group Head Kabir Lawal emphasized that sustainability principles guide all the Bank’s operations, while the exercise improves environmental health and raises awareness about conservation.
The NCF commended Polaris Bank for its leadership and noted that the selected trees will support soil preservation, wind breaking, shade, and food security.
Community representatives described the initiative as timely and impactful, helping local populations actively contribute to climate solutions.
Polaris Bank continues to integrate sustainability into its operations, ensuring environmental stewardship and community development remain central to its long-term strategy.
