Plateau urges community vigilance amid 5-day flood alert
By Abdullahi Lukman
The Plateau State Government has urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and take preventive steps as a 5-day flood warning issued by the federal government forecasts heavy rainfall and possible flooding in several states, including Plateau.
Communities in Mangu Local Government Area have been identified as high-risk zones.
This follows recent flooding in Shimankar, Shendam LGA, which caused widespread damage to homes, farmlands, and livelihoods.
In a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, the state government expressed sympathy with victims of the Shimankar flood and pledged ongoing support through the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has directed local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and community leaders to intensify public awareness and collaborate with emergency agencies to minimize loss of life and property.
The state government emphasized that, while emergency systems are in place, residents must stay informed by monitoring weather updates, avoiding flood-prone areas during rainfall, and complying with official advisories.
Efforts are underway to position emergency response tools and improve communication in vulnerable communities.
Residents have also been urged to report rising water levels or blocked drainage systems to authorities promptly.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property but stressed that community vigilance and cooperation remain crucial during the rainy season.
