Plateau to Revive Rail Corridor for Economic Growth

Plateau State Government has signed a deal with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to revive the long-dormant Jos–Kuru rail corridor to facilitate economic growth.
The agreement, formalized by Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration and the NRC, signals a shift toward sustainable transport solutions aimed at empowering farmers, traders, and underserved communities.
The Jos–Kuru line, once a vital part of the historic Kafanchan–Kuru route, is now being repositioned to connect Nigeria’s Western and Eastern rail corridors — a move expected to stimulate local economies and lower transportation costs.
“This project is more than infrastructure; it’s about economic inclusion and mobility for everyday citizens,” said Mr. Jatau Davou, the Commissioner for Transportation, who signed the MoU on behalf of the state government.
Initial services will run on existing narrow-gauge tracks, with plans for eventual transition to a modern standard-gauge system under the federal government’s rail modernization programme.
While timelines remain undefined, the state government is optimistic that reactivating the corridor will provide immediate benefits, particularly in the agricultural sector, by facilitating cheaper and more efficient movement of goods.
Analysts say the project could serve as a blueprint for other regions seeking to rejuvenate legacy rail lines as engines of rural transformation and intra-state commerce.
