Pay attention to maritime sector, MWUN urges Tinubu

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has urged the incoming government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the maritime sector to promote its sustainability to the Nations economy.

President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, made the call on Monday in Abuja as part of the message to mark this year’s Workers’ Day.

During the Workers Day celebration, Comrade Adeyanju extended his congratulations to Nigerian workers and those around the world.

He also urged the incoming president, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to focus on developing the shipping sector in order to generate more wealth.

As the MWUN leader, he emphasized the importance of the government being proactive in addressing the challenges faced by workers in the country, and resolving lingering issues quickly to give them a renewed sense of hope. This would also serve as a healing measure to alleviate the setbacks workers have experienced under various administrations.

Adeyanju reiterated that as the saying goes: “There’s dignity in Labour, and a diligent workman is entitled to his wages.”

He said if this is the fate of labour, therefore, no single Nigerian and pensioners should be allowed to suffer or be denied his or her tights, wages and enti¬tlements no matter any circumstance.

He further enjoined members and all the union branches, which include the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), dockworkers, seafarers and shipping for their commitment and determination to a purposeful labour in the maritime sector, in spite of all the negating conditions of workers in the country, which had made the industry a very difficult terrain to work and operate.

He noted that despite the presence of the prevailing odds in the sector, the Nigerian worker persisted with commitment of hope and a convincing aspiration for a better Nigeria, which he said had been their source of motivation and above all, the driving force of patriotism.

Adeyanju, however, affirmed the strong resolve of the union to the total unalloyed support for the new president of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, who was recently elected unopposed at the NLC congress.
