Oyo partners UK centre to boost agriculture

By Faridat Salifu

The Oyo State government has forged a collaboration with the United Kingdom Agritech Centre, which aims to implement science and technology-driven agricultural solutions.

Under the collaboration, an Agritech Hub will be established within one of the state’s Agribusiness Industrial Hubs, offering resources and innovative farming practices to local practitioners.

Debo Akande, the Executive Adviser on Agribusiness to Governor Seyi Makinde, shared these developments during a recent meeting with a UK delegation led by Mark Smithson, Director of the UK Department of Business and Trade in Nigeria.

The partnership is part of a broader initiative aimed at trade expansion between Oyo State and the UK.

Akande emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Agriculture has evolved into a technology-driven sector, and many young people are eager to produce but lack the necessary skills. This project will provide them with the opportunities and resources needed.”

The Agritech Centre’s establishment is a funded endeavor, already moving beyond the conceptual stage, focusing on the specific needs and challenges of the region. The project promises to revolutionize agricultural practices by integrating technology and innovation.

Smithson highlighted the UK-Nigeria investment partnership, signed in February 2024, which prioritizes agriculture among its 40 different chapters. He noted that the UK Agritech Centre, consisting of 300 members from various sectors, aims to leverage science and technology to enhance agricultural productivity in Nigeria.
