Oyo Joins Lagos, Bans Use of Styrofoam Packs

The Oyo State Government has banned the use of styrofoam packs for packaging food. The State Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetumobi disclosed this on Monday in Ibadan.

The Commissioner disclosed the ban at the Food Safety Stakeholders’ Forum held at the Conference Room of the Ministry.

He said the indiscriminate use of chemical products for food production, processing, packaging and other sharp practices being carried out by food vendors have become a great concern in the state.

Ajetumobi explained that the Directorate for Food, Water, and Laboratory Services is saddled with the responsibility to regulate food business operations in the state to ensure presentation of wholesome edibles for public consumption adding that the Directorate will double efforts to monitor and inspect food business premises across the state.

According to him, the State Government has also inaugurated a task force on food safety noting that it comprises members from the State Food Safety Management Committee, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP), the Association of Canteen Workers, and others.

In her contribution at the forum, the Director of Food, Water and Laboratory Services, State Ministry of Health, Mrs. AfusatAkande, highlighted the basic requirements for the actors along the food chain to meet before they can be certified.

On his part, the Food Safety Compliance Enforcement Task Force headed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Akintunde Ayinde, promised to work with the ministry to achieve its objective of food safety across the state.
