Oyo Govt Charge Youths on Recycling for Sustainable Environment, Wealth Creation
The Oyo State Government is urging the youth in the state to explore opportunities in recycling plastics and waste as a means of creating wealth and promoting a sustainable environment.
Mrs. Modupe Adeleye, the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, emphasized the potential of plastic recycling during a bi-weekly program called “Head of Service Speaks” on the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism online radio.
Adeleye highlighted the waste-to-wealth initiative of the state government and encouraged schools to engage and educate children about the benefits of plastic recycling. The government-approved waste management consultant has implemented a comprehensive approach to waste reduction, sustainability, and community improvement. Adeleye urged residents to take advantage of the benefits inherent in waste recycling.
The PS pointed out that households generate significant amounts of industrial waste through the use of plastics, paper, and nylon materials. If properly harnessed, these waste materials can be transformed into wealth. Since 2021, the Ministry, in collaboration with relevant organizations, has been conducting a pilot program on waste separation and preservation methods.
In an effort to raise awareness, the Ministry recently conducted an awareness campaign in major markets, including the new Gbagi Market in Ibadan, where the government-approved waste management consultant addressed the traders.
Adeleye emphasized that waste is wealth and encouraged the youth and the general populace to consult with the Ministry to explore the opportunities available.
In a different context, the PS discussed the recent ban on street trading imposed by the state government. She described the ban as a measure taken to protect the lives and well-being of the people.
Adeleye reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare of the residents of Oyo State and urged market traders to comply with the government’s directive by maintaining cleanliness in their shops.
The Oyo State Government’s efforts to promote plastic recycling and tackle street trading align with its vision for a sustainable and prosperous future.
By engaging the youth and emphasizing the importance of waste management, the government aims to create an environmentally conscious society that contributes to economic growth and improves the overall well-being of its citizens.
