Oyo Govt arrest 32 illegal miners, including 2 Chinese

Oyo State Government has announced arrest of 32 individuals, including two Chinese nationals, for engaging in unauthorized mining activities at Sooro market in Kishi, Irepo Local Government Area of the state.
Director-General of Operation Burst, Col James Oladipo Ajibola, disclosed this during a high-level security meeting held at the Deputy Governor’s Office in Agodi, Ibadan, the state capital.
The crackdown on illegal mining came after a clearance operation led by the state Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, who ordered the closure of the market and the immediate evacuation of all illegal structures and shanties erected within the vicinity.
Ajibola commended the collaborative efforts of traditional leaders and the joint security task force, which facilitated the restoration of peace and order in the area.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Ajibola stated, “About 32 illegal miners, including two Chinese migrants, were arrested at the Kishi-Sooro market and are currently undergoing investigation.”
The State Government had previously announced the closure of the market due to rampant illegal mining activities, signaling its firm stance against such unlawful practices.
Addressing the media, the Executive Assistant to the State Governor on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya ( rtd), warned against any involvement in illegal mining activities, stressing the government’s readiness to take decisive action against offenders.
Odukoya urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement efforts, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.
He affirmed that the closure of the market would persist until further directives are issued by Governor Seyi Makinde.
