The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constituted 11-member governing board of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in Abuja, calling on members to prioritize the national interest and play a strategic role in advancing the maritime sector.

In his address at the inauguration, Oyetola emphasized that the board’s responsibilities are rooted in national service and economic development, urging members to guide their decisions with the sole aim of benefiting Nigeria.

He stated that their appointments, made by President Bola Tinubu, were based on careful consideration and trust in their expertise, integrity, and leadership abilities.

The minister stressed that NIMASA, as a critical agency in the maritime industry, plays a pivotal role in driving sustainable economic growth and contributing significantly to Nigeria’s blue economy aspirations.

Oyetola made it clear that the role of the board is not to interfere with the daily operations of the agency but to offer strategic oversight and direction.

He highlighted the importance of upholding values such as transparency, accountability, and professionalism in all board activities.

The minister reiterated President Tinubu’s directive that board members, particularly chairpersons, must maintain a non-executive posture and refrain from micromanaging the agency’s affairs.

Instead, he encouraged them to support the agency’s management while holding them to high performance standards and aligning all efforts with the national vision.

Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated board, Chairman Yusuf Abubakar expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them and assured the government of their unwavering dedication to duty.

Abubakar noted that NIMASA plays a central role in realizing the country’s economic diversification goals, especially in harnessing the vast potential of Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy sectors.

He pledged that the board would work cohesively with the management and staff of NIMASA to strengthen institutional capacity and drive improved performance outcomes.

The board chairman further committed to fostering a culture of transparency, professionalism, and innovation within the agency.

He assured stakeholders that the board would function as a unified team driven by purpose, with the shared goal of supporting the president’s vision of a secure and prosperous maritime environment.

The newly inaugurated board members include Babatunde H. Bombata, Emmanuel Nosakhare Igbinosun, Rear Admiral P.C. Nwatu, Arc. Yinusa Yakubu, Fedelis Lorkoso Agbir, Iroghama Blessing Ogbeifun, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Hon. Chudi Offodile, Engr. Fatai Taye Adeyemi, and Mr. Jibril Abba.
