The Osun State Government has rolled out relief packages for residents, businesses, and institutions affected by a destructive rainstorm in Osogbo and nearby communities.
In a statement issued at the weekend, the Office of the Director-General and Special Envoy of the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, acknowledged widespread damage across areas such as Aregbe Junction, Oke-Fia, Ogo-Oluwa, and Osogbo Grammar School.
Several structures, including homes, kiosks, fences, billboards, and electric poles, were affected, disrupting livelihoods and economic activities, although no casualties were recorded.
Authorities attributed the incident to a combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds, consistent with projections from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, which warned of early-season storms, variable rainfall patterns, and rising temperatures across the South-West.
The government noted that prior to the storm, it had already begun implementing preventive strategies based on NiMet forecasts, including climate risk advisories to ministries and agencies, identification of flood-prone areas, and preliminary drainage maintenance planning.
Officials also highlighted ongoing integration of climate data into urban planning and infrastructure development, alongside stakeholder coordination aimed at improving preparedness.
Despite these measures, the severity of the storm has prompted the government to intensify its response and scale up interventions across affected areas.
The DG, Prof. Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe disclosed that immediate actions now underway include rapid assessment of damage, coordination with emergency responders, and clearance of debris to restore normal activities.
Authorities also announced accelerated drainage desilting and expanded flood control efforts in high-risk zones, as well as a statewide safety audit of vulnerable infrastructure such as billboards and electric poles.
In addition, enforcement of waste management regulations is being strengthened to curb indiscriminate dumping in drainage channels, while structured waste collection systems are being expanded.
The government further pledged to enhance early warning systems and public advisories to ensure residents receive timely information on extreme weather events.
Residents have been urged to support government efforts by avoiding tree felling, planting trees, maintaining proper waste disposal practices, reporting blocked drains, and complying with environmental and urban planning regulations.
The government emphasized that climate change is already impacting communities and requires collective action, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding infrastructure, and promoting sustainable, climate-resilient development across the state.
