Ondo Govt Assures Residents of Clearing, Expanding Waterways to Mitigate Flood
The Ondo State Government has assured residents that it will properly clear and expand all waterways and canals to reduce flood incidents in the state.
During an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas in Akure metropolis, the Acting Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, made this promise on Saturday. He appealed to residents to avoid improper disposal of waste, which often blocks water channels.
Some of the areas affected include Ala, Ayedun, and Araromi in Akure South Local Government, as well as Irese in Ifedore Council area.
Aiyedatiwa assured the victims of swift intervention and stated that the state government had released counterpart funds to relevant agencies to clear and expand canals and waterways in order to prevent
future flood incidents.
“We want to appeal to residents to desist from throwing waste into drainages. This act obstructs the flow of water, making it difficult for water to pass through,” he said.
“Please cooperate with the environmental officers and promptly pay your dues for waste collection services. The government of Ondo State has released counterpart funds to relevant agencies to expand the
waterways for the easy flow of water. I assure you that there will be prompt intervention to clear the water channels for smooth water movement,” he added.
Stephen Abitogun, the member representing Akure South Constituency 1 in the State House of Assembly, and Gbenga Olaniyi, the Chairman of Akure South Local Government, also assured quick intervention to prevent future flooding.
The Olurese of Irese, Oba Ahmed Saka, and the Alaaye of Aaye community, Oba Peter Adeoye, expressed their gratitude to the acting governor for the prompt response and looked forward to government assistance in the near future.
