The Ogun State Government has launched a plan to plant over five million trees to drive environmental sustainability and economic growth.
The initiative was announced in Abeokuta during the International Day of Forests.
The Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, said the state had begun an aggressive tree-planting campaign alongside stricter action against illegal logging.
He noted that forests support jobs, livelihoods, and key sectors, but are often undervalued in economic planning despite their role in water regulation, soil protection, and carbon storage.
Oludotun expressed confidence that the initiative would strengthen the state’s economy.
The Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, urged residents to avoid indiscriminate tree felling, stressing that tree planting is vital to environmental protection and sustainable development.
The government also said it is partnering with investors to restore degraded forests and expand forest cover across the state.
