Ogun crafts resilient water systems master plan

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Ogun State government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing resilient water systems, strengthening utilities, and investing in infrastructure in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 and 11.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ validation workshop on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs and Water Resources, Damilola Otubanjo, said the state is preparing a comprehensive master plan to improve water access, evaluate existing systems, and position Ogun as a model for sustainable water governance.

She added that the plan will also guide government actions and attract increased investment into the water and sanitation sector.

Otubanjo told residents to expect better service delivery as several non-functional water schemes will be reactivated under the new roadmap. She emphasized the need for long-term planning rather than reactive fixes.

Governor’s Consultant on Water Resources, Muinat Jaji, explained that consultants engaged by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation had assessed multiple water schemes and identified infrastructure gaps.

The workshop, she said, was held to allow stakeholders to review and validate the diagnostic report. The interventions, she added, will span short-, medium-, and long-term phases.

Dr. Linda Akpami, Project Director for the consultancy firm, stated that the master plan will cover a 30-year projection, outlining requirements for efficient and functional water facilities.

She said the firm would also provide technical advisory support during the implementation phase.
