Ogoni youths protest alleged marginalization by HYPREP

By Nneka Nwogwugwu

Some youths of Ogoni on Monday held a protest against the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) of the Federal Ministry of Environment.

The youths who claimed that they were kinsmen of the ogoni nine protested against alleged marginalization by HYPREP.

The protesting youths who gathered with their placards at the premises of HYPREP located in Port Harcourt, alleged that the management of HYPREP are refusing to recognize family members of the ogoni nine.

The leaders who were five in number demanded for their supposes rights go be duly given to them.

Addressing the protesters, Project coordinator of HYPREP, Dr. Ferdinand Giadom, assured the protesters that HYPREP will not relent in its Responsibility.

He also urged the leaders to have a roundtable discussion with him so that their pending issues will be properly deliberated.

NatureNews recalls that HYPREP on May 13, had released a statement against perceived planned protests by the Ogoni youths.

The statement read in part, “The attention of the Management of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has been drawn to utterances in the media suggesting planned protests against persons engaged to work on the Project.

“We want to state categorically that the Management of HYPREP under Dr. Giadom has never at any time called, mobilized or incited anyone to protest against the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Environment or the Presidency over re-engagement of any project personnel.

“On the contrary, Dr Giadom uses this medium to appeal to all stakeholders and the Ogoni community to shelve any protest in the offing and engage the Project with the aim of addressing whatever grievances they may have against the leadership of the Project.

“ This is necessary because the Ogoniland clean-up project must not be allowed to derail over matters that are peripheral to the overall picture of the HYPREP project and its deliverables to the Ogoni people.”
