NPA, NLNG Deepen Partnership to Boost Gas Export

By Abbas Nazil

The Managing Director and CEO of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) in its efforts to expand liquefied natural gas production and exports.

This assurance was given during a courtesy visit by NLNG’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Phillip Mshelbila, to the NPA headquarters in Marina, Lagos, on Monday, January 21, 2025.

Dr. Mshelbila expressed gratitude to the NPA for its continued collaboration, highlighting the critical role of the authority in facilitating NLNG’s export operations.

He called for enhanced synergy as NLNG scales up its production capacity to meet increasing global demand for liquefied natural gas.

“The support of the NPA has been pivotal to our operations,” Mshelbila said, continuing, “As we expand, we look forward to a deeper partnership to ensure seamless export activities.”

In his response, Dr. Dantsoho underscored the NPA’s dedication to fostering export-oriented growth in alignment with the federal government’s objectives.

He described NLNG as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic progress and export performance, and we remain unwavering in our support to grow this partnership,” he remarked.

Dr. Dantsoho emphasized the strategic importance of NLNG’s operations to Nigeria’s economic development, noting that their collaboration contributes significantly to the nation’s foreign trade success.

The partnership aligns with Nigeria’s broader vision of diversifying its economy and increasing non-oil exports.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of Nigeria’s strong export performance, as highlighted in the Nigerian Economic Summit Group’s (NESG) foreign trade alert for the third quarter of 2024.

The report revealed a trade surplus of 5.81 trillion naira (approximately $3.7 billion), driven predominantly by export activities facilitated through NPA platforms.

As global demand for liquefied natural gas surges, NLNG’s planned production expansion represents a significant opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its position in the global energy market.

The NPA’s commitment to operational excellence and export facilitation will play a vital role in enabling NLNG and other exporters to maximize their contributions to Nigeria’s economy.

The collaboration between NPA and NLNG underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable economic growth.

Both organizations expressed optimism about the future of their partnership and the role it will play in furthering Nigeria’s export ambitions.
