NNPCL and security forces have destroyed a barge carrying stolen crude oil due to oil theft.
According to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, a barge carrying stolen crude oil was sunk.
A statement from the NNPCL said government security organisations and private security companies worked together on Saturday to destroy the barge.
A barge is an inland waterway vessel with a flat bottom that is used to move cargo or petroleum products.
The barge’s operators were detained in December 2022, according to the NNPCL.
It added that in Agge Community, a border village between the states of Delta and Bayelsa, “the barge, designated MT Brighton 1, which was filled with stolen crude, was seized in one of the streams feeding into the Ramos River.”
According to the statement, the security intervention team destroyed Blessed Corporate Oil & Gas Services Ltd. in Opete, Warri, Delta State, because it was allegedly harbouring vehicles carrying stolen petroleum and dumping the illicit substance into its underground storage tanks.
Nigeria has seen an increase in oil theft occurrences in recent years in its oil-producing region, which has made the country’s income problems worse.
The Nigerian government launched an application to track theft incidents in August of last year in an effort to reduce theft of crude oil. A multibillion-naira contract for pipeline surveillance was also given by the NNPC to Government Tompolo, a former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta.
