NiMet predicts 3-day thunderstorms, heavy rain across Nigeria

By Faridat Salifu

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast of thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions of the country for three consecutive days, beginning on Tuesday.
The agency’s latest weather outlook, released on Monday in Abuja, highlights the potential for significant weather disruptions, particularly in northern and central states.
NiMet weather forecast predicts early morning thunderstorms over Bauchi, Kebbi, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, Adamawa, and Kaduna, with the storm systems expected to persist throughout the day.
Meanwhile, central states including Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa will also experience thunderstorms, while moderate rainfall is anticipated in parts of southern Nigeria such as Ebonyi, Enugu, and Delta.
The agency’s outlook for Wednesday suggests a similar pattern, with northern states like Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara bracing for thunderstorms in the morning and later during the day.
The agency has warned that these conditions may lead to flooding, especially in urban areas. States in the north-central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, and Kwara, are also likely to experience thunderstorms into the evening hours.
In the south, intermittent rainfall is expected to continue, with thunderstorms anticipated in states like Ekiti, Ondo, and Cross River by Wednesday afternoon.
On Thursday, the weather conditions are set to persist, with thunderstorms expected in Borno, Bauchi, and Adamawa in the north, as well as in southern cities like Lagos and Bayelsa.
Consequently, NiMet advised residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions, warning of possible urban flooding due to the intensity of the predicted downpours.
It also urged airline operators and the general public to stay informed by regularly checking weather updates from the agency.
As more unpredictable weather lies ahead, the agency emphasized the importance of adhering to safety advisories to mitigate risks posed by thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
